The Gnomes of Thadis are a study in contradictions. On the surface, it is an easily accessible, remarkably open nation, filled with beautiful architecture, friendly inhabitants, and a peaceful yet energized feeling that welcomes visitors to stay and unburden their weary souls. Thadis itself is seemingly idyllic, with song and cheer taking the place of the violence and crime common in the other nations of Sytheria.

The truth is far more complex and rarely realized except by the Gnomes themselves. The Gnomish thirst for knowledge and magic is well known, and Thadis is renowned for its libraries and universities and for the skills of its learned alchemists and elemental artificers. Weak as they are physically, the Gnomes have refined the use of knowledge as a weapon. When diplomacy fails, they fight their wars with blackmail, espionage, and careful assassination. A Gnome’s innocent curiosity may be just what it seems- or it may be a well-honed façade concealing a cunning and manipulative mind.

The Gnomes’ natural gift for illusion is a manifestation of their racial bent toward deception; a Gnome will rarely engage in direct conflict when he can strike from the shadows and trick others into working on his behalf. Most Gnomes derive great pleasure from these subtle games; two Gnomes might be engaged in vicious political feuds with one another and still be great friends.

Vibrant Expression

Gnomes stand about 3 to 3-1/2 feet tall and weigh 40 to 45 pounds. Their skin ranges from fairly pale to woody brown, their hair is fair and their eyes can be any shade of blue. Gnomes generally wear flashy colors, and they decorate their clothes with intricate stitching or fine jewelry. Gnomes reach adulthood at about the age of 40 and they typically live about 350 years, though some can live almost 500 years.

A Gnome’s personality is writ large in his or her appearance. A male Gnome’s beard, in contrast to his wild hair, is kept carefully trimmed but often styled into curious forks or neat points. A Gnome’s clothing, though usually made in modest earth tones, is elaborately decorated with embroidery, embossing, or gleaming jewels.

Deceptive Dedication

Gnomes speak as if they can’t get the thoughts out of their heads fast enough. Even as they offer ideas and opinions on a range of subjects, they still manage to listen carefully to others, adding the appropriate exclamations of surprise and appreciation along the way.

Though Gnomes love jokes of all kinds, particularly puns and pranks, these are superficial desires and pale at their dedication to the more serious tasks they undertake. Many Gnomes are skilled engineers, alchemists, tinkers, and inventors. They are also the de-facto experts on all things magic. They’re willing to make mistakes and laugh at themselves in the process of perfecting what they do, taking bold (sometimes foolhardy) risks and dreaming large.

Gnome Names

Gnome society is divided up into major houses, each of which is composed of multiple families. Each gnome has three names: his personal name, the name of his family, and the name of his house. Gnomish names tend to be long and lyrical, with personal and clan names averaging three syllables in length, and there is a strong tradition of alliteration.

Male Names: Alian, Castar, Dorius, Elymar, Haliar, Hasal, Illian, Lassius, Sanadal, Tallian
Female Names: Alina, Cassia, Dalia, Jandia, Myssia, Ranadala, Saralyssa, Talina, Tandria, Vassilia
Family Names: Alyre, Canatar, Del, Dorian, Kan, Lin, Lyrriman, Sil, Syrralan, Torralyn
House Names: Adredar, Clebdecher, Dalian, Davandi, Harlian, Korran, Lonadar, Nezzelech, Santiar, Tarliach

Seeing the World

Curious and impulsive, Gnomes might take up adventuring as a way to see the world or for the love of exploring. Despite their cheerful façade, a Gnome's true intentions are rarely known to those of other species, particularly when it comes to leaving the safety of their homes in Thadis. Regardless of what spurs them to adventure, Gnomes who adopt this way of life eke as much enjoyment out of it as they do out of any other activity they undertake, sometimes to the great annoyance of their adventuring companions.

Powers and Abilities

  • Ability Score Increase- Your Intelligence score increases by 2 and your Charisma score increases by 1.
  • Alignment- Gnomes often seem good-hearted, however this is a carefully crafted image that doesn't reflect the true nature of a Gnome. In truth, Gnomes are most often neutral. Those who tend toward law are sages, engineers, researchers, scholars, investigators, or inventors. Those who tend toward chaos are minstrels, tricksters, or wanderers.
  • Gifted Scribe- When you make an Intelligence (History) check or an ability check using calligrapher's supplies, you can roll a d4 and add the number rolled to the ability check.
  • Gnome Cunning- You have advantage on all Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma saving throws against magic.
  • Scribe's Insight- You know the Message cantrip. You can also cast Comprehend Languages once with this trait, and you regain the ability to cast it when you finish a short or long rest Starting at 3rd level, you can cast the Magic Mouth spell with this trait, and you regain the ability to cast it when you finish a long rest. Intelligence is your spellcasting ability for these spells.
  • Spells of the Mark- If you have the Spellcasting or the Pact Magic class feature, the spells on the Spells of the Mark table are added to the spell list of your spellcasting class.
