The Olith’Dar have carved a deadly existence out of the underground caverns of Tunis. Allied with the monstrous creatures of the Shadow Rifts, the Olith’Dar battle not only the Unhallowed on the surface world, but also the Obreeni invasion of their ancestral underground home.

Unlike most civilizations on Sytheria, the Olith’Dar have always been a purely matriarchal society. Because of the nature of their worship of the goddess Idrith, female Olith’Dar hold all positions of power, and up until recently, only females could become priests. It was not until the worship of the god Shalim’Dor took root in the Olith’Dar society that males were allowed into the priesthood, and even then their power is very limited.

The Olith’Dar civilization is a very structured, caste based system. Only those of noble houses are allowed to train at the premiere priest schools or the main wizarding school. Less powerful swarms usually train most of their males as fighters and rogues. In order to gain some of this training, it is common for row peasants to pledge their service to a ruling clan, and take their name as a thrall.

Appearance

Olith’Dar are an elven race, and therefore share many of the same basic features as the overworld elves. They have pointed ears, and thin and lithe bodies which tend to be approximately five and a half feet tall. Unlike the surface elves however, their skin is anywhere from deep violet-blue to charcoal black and their hair can vary from gray to ivory colored. Most Olith’Dar also have violet or yellow eyes, however once in a while a female Olith’Dar is born with Ruby red eyes, which are said to be a sign that the child has the favor of Idrith. Olith’Dar also have a habit of creating intricate tattoos on their bodies using arachnid venom to scar themselves (the scars turn white). To further this menacing appearance they often file their fingernails down to claws as well.

Noble Olith’Dar always wear a padawafi, also known as a war cloak, in public. This shawl-like cloak wraps around the neck of the Olith’Dar and offers additional protection to them through miscellaneous enchantments. The quality of these padawafi symbolizes not only the person wealth and power of the individual, but the prominence of the Olith’Dar swarm to which he/she belongs.

Clans

Since being banished from the surface the Olith'Dar have spread throughout the Shadowrifts, covering a massive territory. As they spread, they began separating into several distinct tribes.

Z'Taar

The Z'Taar are the warrior sect of the Olith'Dar, and hold no settlements of their own. Often travelling between settlements, they are common Shadowrift delvers and often sell their services as mercenaries for hire. They worship the Dark Weaponsmaster, Z'Taarim, above all others and as such honor is important above all else to the members of Clan Z'Taar. Despite the lack of settlements, the Z'Tarr take great pride in their fellowship and like the Xul append their clan identifier (Z') to the beginning of their surname.

Xendor

The Xendor have settled primarily on Valis. Often viewed as feral and wild by their kin, the Xendor primarily worship the scorpion god Shalim'Dor, however they will bow to Idrith when forced (often to save their own lives when confronted by members of Clans Akar and Xul). Due to their worship, male Olith'dar priests strive to be converted into half elf/half scorpion hybrids known as Scorrow- the children of Shalim'Dor. Xendor settlements always begin with the clan identifier Xen', with the two largest being Xen'Drakus on Valis and Xen'Mortus on Piscea.

Akar

After the fall of Yadrimoor to the Obreeni, Clan Akar picked up the pieces of Olith'Dar society on Tunis. Akar settlements always begin with the clan identifier Ak', the most well known of which being the city of Ak'Tarnis, which became the de facto capital of the Olith'Dar empire. This resulted in Clan Akar rising to power and prominence after Clan Xul's disappearance. Clan Akar is devoted to the Goddess of Deceit, despite her lack of support when the Obreeni attacked. Although the members of Clan Z'Taar are tolerated within Akar controlled cities, it is merely a relationship based on mutual need. However, Clan Xendor are considered traitors to the White Shadow due to their worship of Shalim'Dor over Idrith and are killed on sight.

Xul

The chosen of Idrith, Clan Xul were the leaders of Olith'Dar society until the fall of Yadrimoor. The night before the attack the members of the clan within the city disappeared, never to be seen again. Only those on missions outside the city remained and to this day are not aware of what happened to the rest of their clan. Although the member of the clan are welcome in both Akar and Xendor settlements, they are met with distrust wherever they go. Since the disappearance the Z'Taar have made efforts to exterminate the Xul for their perceived betrayal, often attacking Xul caravans, although never within the city-limits of an Olith'Dar settlement so that innocents are not caught in the firefight. The Xul view their clan name as title to be proud of (as the former leaders of the Olith'Dar) and despite the hardships the name causes always append their clan name to the beginning of their surname.

Driders

Although not a clan unto themselves, the driders (half Olith'Dar, half spider creatures) do still wander the depths of the Shadowrifts. Created by Clan Xul as a punishment for betraying their goddess, driders are not welcome within Akar settlements (Clan Xendor tolerates driders as relatives to the honored Scorrow). Looking to prove themselves worthy of their goddess many driders seek out to exterminate the Obreeni in response to the fall of Yadrimoor. They also actively seek out the remaining members of Clan Xul in retribution for their cursed nature.
